The rolling foothills and spindly roads of Massachusetts bring me back to you
Under canal passes and over cracked roads straight to Victorian homes on plush lots
Amidst the leaves and the timber piles
Smile-sore cheeks and jeans cuffed over boots
Where our country's history took a baker's dozen of turns and leaps
Deep
At the epicenter of education
Enclosed within a petri dish of culture
Every bookstore nook was ripe for you to nestle into
Every pizza parlor
Under canal passes and over cracked roads straight to Victorian homes on plush lots
Amidst the leaves and the timber piles
Smile-sore cheeks and jeans cuffed over boots
Where our country's history took a baker's dozen of turns and leaps
Deep
At the epicenter of education
Enclosed within a petri dish of culture
Every bookstore nook was ripe for you to nestle into
Every pizza parlor
Every hole in the wall serving another plated smile
Another serving of eyes eager to meet
And checks laying out lifetimes before being paid
I could hear the floor creak of morning routines
The clang of a spoon helping itself to brie with honey
And a "GET OUT OF BED"
Like it was a premonition
Already written but not yet found
A chapter I was peering into from just behind the rose bush
Everything felt warm because it was
A place I didn't know felt like home
Because in my head you were there
Filling all the blank spaces in my photos
The silences before sleep
And it made all the difference
It always did
Another serving of eyes eager to meet
And checks laying out lifetimes before being paid
I could hear the floor creak of morning routines
The clang of a spoon helping itself to brie with honey
And a "GET OUT OF BED"
Like it was a premonition
Already written but not yet found
A chapter I was peering into from just behind the rose bush
Everything felt warm because it was
A place I didn't know felt like home
Because in my head you were there
Filling all the blank spaces in my photos
The silences before sleep
And it made all the difference
It always did
